REVISITING THE DRAMATIC LEGACY OF AJIT DAS: A CRITICAL STUDY OF MODERN ODIA THEATRE

Abstract

Modern Odia theatre has evolved through the contributions of several distinguished dramatists, directors, actors, and theatre educators who transformed traditional performance into a modern artistic expression. Among them, Ajit Das (1949–2020) occupies a unique position as an actor, director, playwright, and theatre pedagogue whose work bridged classical theatrical traditions and contemporary social realities. Although he achieved immense popularity in Odia cinema, his enduring contribution lies in revitalizing modern Odia theatre through innovative direction, literary adaptations, actor training, and institutional development. This paper critically examines AjitDas's dramatic philosophy, theatrical aesthetics, directorial techniques, and cultural legacy. Employing historical and analytical approaches, the study argues that Das significantly expanded the artistic vocabulary of Odia theatre by combining realism, indigenous performance traditions, and modern dramaturgy. His theatre reflects concerns about identity, morality, social transformation, and the preservation of Odia cultural heritage. The article concludes that Ajit Das remains one of the principal architects of contemporary Odia theatre whose influence continues to inspire theatre practitioners and scholars.
