Ecological Resistance and Sustainable Development in the Eastern Himalayan Region: Challenges, Community Responses, and Future Pathways

Abstract

 The Eastern Himalayan region, renowned globally as a biodiversity hotspot, is experiencing unprecedented socio-ecological transformations driven by rapid infrastructure development, extractive industries, and climate change. This paper examines the complex dynamics of ecological resistance orchestrated by indigenous and local communities against top-down developmental paradigms. By investigating the dialectical relationship between environmental degradation and community-led conservation, the study highlights the emergence of grassroots ecological movements. Through a mixed-methods sociological approach, this research maps the intensity of ecological threats, evaluates the diverse spectrum of community responses, and proposes sustainable development pathways that integrate traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) with modern policy frameworks. Findings reveal that while state-led mega-projects (such as hydropower dams) pose the highest threat, community forestry and proactive activism offer resilient counter-narratives. The study underscores the necessity of transitioning from exclusionary conservation models to participatory, decentralized governance systems to ensure long-term sustainability in the region.
