Abstract

The multiple effect of the construction industry to both developed and developing countries cannot be overemphasized. Risk can be described as the absence of information when a decision is to be made at any time throughout a process. The construction industry is often considered as complex and defragmented due to working in a project-based format, with a unique product and a process where most times decisions need to be made with insufficient information. Therefore, proper risk management processes can be vital to minimizing risks, maximizing opportunities and securing a successful project process. Managing risks in residential construction projects has been recognized as a very important management process in order to achieve the project objectives in terms of time, cost, quality, safety and environmental sustainability. The aim of this research project is to assess the risk management practices in residential construction projects in Abuja. The study explores the different types of risks that are commonly associated with residential construction projects, as well as the strategies and techniques that are utilized to manage these risks. The research is conducted through a mixed-methods approach, which will involve both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis. The study utilises a survey questionnaire to collect data from construction professionals, including architects, engineers, contractors, and project managers, who have experience working on residential construction projects in Abuja. The survey aim to identify the types of risks that are most prevalent in these projects, as well as the methods that are most commonly used to manage these risks. In conclusion the findings of this research project contribute to the development of best practices for risk management in residential construction projects in Abuja. The results is also useful for construction professionals, policymakers, and other stakeholders who are involved in the development and implementation of risk management strategies for construction projects. It is recommended that professionals, policymakers and other stakeholders involved in projects should aim to enhance the understanding of risk management practices in the residential construction sector in Abuja and provide insights for improving the quality and safety of residential construction projects in the city.
