Abstract
The judicial systems around the world are under growing pressure because of the rising volume of litigations, slow case resolution, and lack of equal access to legal representation. In the case of India, all these factors have culminated into huge case backlog issues, thus damaging the credibility of judicial processes and adversely affecting marginalized populations. Although digitization has been adopted to improve administration process, it is of little help with respect to legal analysis and case assessment purposes. This paper introduces AI4Justice – a multimodal artificial intelligence approach for helping judiciary make effective decisions along with providing legal aid to common people. AI4Justice includes two distinct yet interrelated systems: (i) judgment prediction mechanism to analyze case story and find out potential outcomes with corresponding statutes, and (ii) intelligent legal aid chatbot to assist citizens with necessary legal advice and documentation. The system uses the TF-IDF vector representation along with domain-sensitive named entity recognition in conjunction with the hybrid classifier using Random Forest and Support Vector Machine classifiers. This ensures that there is a trade-off between the prediction accuracy and model explainability, which is one of the most important aspects to consider while working with such models in a legal context. Results of experimentation on publicly available Indian criminal law datasets show consistency of the performance of AI4Justice, obtaining F1-score higher than 0.89 for all the metrics used.
