Disaster Resiliency in The Lens of The Coastal Villagers: A Descriptive Case Study

Abstract
Coastal communities in the Philippines remain among the most vulnerable populations to typhoons and other natural disasters, yet their capacity for resilience continues to be understudied. This descriptive case study explored how disaster resiliency is practiced and embodied by Ilonggo coastal villagers in Bo. Obrero, Lapuz, Iloilo City, a community with a long history of exposure to severe weather events. Using a qualitative research design grounded in Resilience Theory, eight (8) purposively selected informants were interviewed through an expert-validated disaster resiliency interview guide. Narrative data analysis and qualitative interview analysis were employed to identify meaningful patterns from interview transcripts. Findings revealed two overarching themes: self-efficacy and response efficacy, each comprising major categories that shape how coastal villagers prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. Self-efficacy was shaped by informants' socioeconomic status and years of residency, while response efficacy was reflected through disaster-based actions and community capacity-building activities. The study concludes that disaster resiliency among coastal villagers is not merely reactive but is an adaptive process deeply rooted in lived experience, socioeconomic realities, and community engagement. These findings contribute to a growing body of literature on community-level disaster resilience in Southeast Asia and offer practical insights for local disaster risk reduction and management initiatives.
