FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF ANTI-ITCHING CALAMINE LOTION

Abstract
Anti-itching calamine lotion is a commonly used topical pharmaceutical preparation intended to provide relief from itching, irritation, rashes, insect bites, prickly heat, and minor dermatological disorders. The present research work focuses on the formulation and evaluation of anti-itching calamine lotion using suitable pharmaceutical excipients to obtain a stable, safe, and effective topical formulation. Calamine and zinc oxide were used as active ingredients because of their soothing, protective, antipruritic, and mild antiseptic properties. Bentonite was used as a suspending agent, while glycerin acted as a moisturizing and humectant agent. The lotion was prepared by simple trituration and dispersion methods using standard pharmaceutical techniques. The prepared formulation was evaluated for various parameters including physical appearance, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, washability, irritation test, and stability studies. The prepared lotion showed smooth texture, uniform consistency, good spreadability, and acceptable skin-friendly pH. No signs of phase separation or instability were observed during storage studies. The formulation was also found to be non-irritant and easily washable. The results indicated that the prepared anti-itching calamine lotion possesses satisfactory pharmaceutical properties suitable for topical application. The cooling and soothing action produced by the formulation provided effective relief from itching and skin irritation. The study confirms that calamine lotion remains an economical, safe, stable, and patient-friendly dermatological preparation. Further improvements may be achieved by incorporation of herbal extracts and advanced excipients for enhanced therapeutic activity and cosmetic acceptability.
